What I Would Like To See From Assassin’s Creed III

Ben Stoker February 16, 2012 2

As we heard yesterday, Assassin’s Creed III has been announced. Here is my wish list for the third instalment:

No Desmond – Please

I know this is a big one but I just absolutely hate Desmond. With a passion. There I said it. In Assassin’s Creed he couldn’t do anything, and for a grown man to not be able to run is a bit odd. In that game I just wanted to play as Altair all the time, I didn’t need the cut-scenes with Desmond walking from the Animus to his bed and back, it just dragged out the game, and there was no need for it. If they had just made this series without Desmond it still can make sense. I hated Desmond and I have never stopped. However, due to the ending of AC:R Desmond will likely be a feature.

A New Combat System

The current combat system of Assassin’s Creed revolves around two buttons. Block and counter. Even if you have the best intentions of not doing it, you will end up doing it anyway since it is the easiest way to kill everyone. Killing hundreds of guards in combat soon gets boring since they are the biggest derps on the planet and just gather around in a circle while they get countered one by one. Not the most engaging combat system going. I am a big fan of the combat system in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, and while you can counter, there are more bonuses for linking together attacks and timing. It just feels more rewarding.

No Money Feature

In ACII and AC:B the money system was pointless. The money snowballed so hard that you would end up with infinite cash, all items bought, and nothing to do with it. It was nice to upgrade the towns to see what they all looked like etc. but in the end it was futile and not a feature I enjoyed in the game as it got nearer to the end. Upgrading the items could be done via codex pages or general story progression, as with AC I but I think the money feature just meant that you always ended up with practically infinite throwing knives or crossbow bolts as well as a hefty health bar in no time at all.

At Least One Ancient Storyline

Ubisoft could be tempted to go straight into the future and focus on Desmond’s quest to save the world but the ancient story lines are the best. The Crusades and Renaissance Italy are far cooler than what I can assume is modern-day America or England. Altair and Ezio are also far more bad-ass than Desmond ever will be, and another ancient ancestor will have to be more awesome than Desmond whatever happens.

No Guns

In these type of games, guns really annoy me as I feel that sneak and planning should decide the outcome of the battle rather than whether or not you can just shoot all the guards. I know that this hasn’t featured prominently so far in the series but if they make a future version then I think it would hinder the game to feature guns, but at the same time they have to include guns since it is in the future, and guns have already been invented by then. This is clearly a paradox and one reason why they should not include Desmond or a future story. The below picture is the first ever screenshot of Assassin’s Creed III featuring the new dodge mechanic in combat:

Overall, the Assassin’s Creed games have been really good so far and there is a lot that Ubisoft can do right AND wrong in this new title.

What are your opinions on what should or shouldn’t be included in AC III? Feel free to comment below.

Thanks for reading,

Ben.

I enjoy games, as you may have noticed. Play mostly on PC, with a tad of PS3 thrown in on occasion. Expect silly comments and views. Maybe some news too.

Couldn’t agree more about the guns – the whole point of the game’s combat is that it shows off exactly why those *ancient* eras are so cool – why would I want to shoot my templars? I can do that in Call of Duty, I’d rather use my badass concoction of fast-acting poison and make them dance to their deaths instead.

As for the killing off of Desmond, I’d be willing to bet all of my pennies on him being killed off AFTER Assassin’s Creed 3 (at the end of it anyway) – there’s no way Ubisoft will do that before then as they don’t have a proper story reason for doing so – though they will at the end of AC3. And anyway, Nolan North, who voices Desmond, is currently the video game ‘posterchild’ (well he’s certainly a big star in our niche) and they’ll want to continue to harness his /dulcet/ tones for a little bit longer. Choosing NOT to use him is like the gaming equivalent of kicking a puppy.

I agree that Desmond will be in it, I just don’t like him very much, that’s essentially my reasoning. Nolan North is huge in gaming right now so it’s true that it would be silly to not use him, if only for the money. It’s jsut I don’t like the concept of Desmond or his storyline and I feel like having just Altair and Ezio the games would still be really good and have a good storyline linked together, just without the general faffing around with Desmond in between, ruining the flow of the story.

      Thanks for your comment,

      Ben.
